Ashtray in white Capodimonte porcelain with hand painted gold trim and velvet goatskin base. This design was realized for the opening of the London Store. The story behind it shows a connection between London and Naples. In fact it’s decorated with the sailing ship ”HMS Victory” which was the flagship of Vice Admiral Horatio Lord Nelson at the Battle of Trafalgar and where he issued the signal “England Expects That Every Man Will Do His Duty” as the British fleet closed in to engage with the combined French and Spanish fleet off Cape Trafalgar, off the coast of south west Spain.
Nelson was well cheered by the attention showered on him by the citizens of Naples, the prestige accorded to him by the kingdom’s elite, and the comforts he received at the Hamilton’s residence. He made frequent visits to attend functions in his honour, or to tour nearby attractions with Emma Lyon, wife of Sir William Hamilton, the British Envoy to Naples, with whom he had then fallen deeply in love, and she was almost constantly at his side.
That is why the sailing ship is sketched in the waters of Naples and the ashtray has 4 Cupids at the angles which describe the love of Lord Hamilton for Pompei and the love of Nelson for Lady Hamilton .
